Exciting Term 4

This term has been full of fun and new activities. This has been the best Term 4 at Wainui, and also the last one for me.

Just Dance & Furniture Olympics
Everyday before school we go to the hall and either do Just Dance or Furniture Olympics. Just Dance is a game that you can play with a phone. You hold the phone in one hand and do all the actions that are on screen. We don't use a phone though we just put it up onto the screen and copy it. We have been doing just dance because it relates to our Culture City. The Teachers chose dances that were from other places from around the world. For Furniture Olympics we go into our Buzz groups and try make the piece of Furniture the teacher calls out.

Athletics
For 3 weeks we had been preparing for the day of  Athletics. The day finally came. Everyone dressed up in their house colours and put on face paint. We walked over to the reserve and sat down in our house colours. 1st was sprints, we cheered on all our team mates and clapped when they got a placing. 2nd was high jump it just kept on growing higher and higher until there was a winner. 3rd was Ball throw we get 2 throws and they judge the furthest one. We last did long jump.

Orientation day
We jumped on the bus and headed off to our intermediates. On the way the bus driver forgot to pick up the other school. So we had to go around the block to collect them. Once we had gotten everyone on the bus we drove the school. While we were their we went to our classes had a swim in their pool and had a barbeque lunch. When we got back to school everyone was talking about our awesome the school they chose was.

This is my last year at WBS. I am really excited for next year because I am going to a new school with new kids. I am also nervous because lots of the other kids are a lot bigger then me.

Kapa Haka Festival!

"Wheels on the bus go round and round".... All I can hear is the sound of excited Wainui school kids singing their lungs out. Finally we arrive at the Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival. and we all stumble out of the bus. It's a  Wednesday morning so I'm still tired. We wait under some shelter till the other school finishes their performance. We quietly walk into the hall while everyone is applauding and find a seat. After their performance we go back outside and have a talk to the teachers.

I race over to where all the others from the front line are getting on their piupiu. I pull my piupiu out of the sock and undo the lace. A teacher gives me a hand with putting it and soon it is swaying in the wind. We make our way to the hall and wait for the host to welcome us onto the stage. " Can we have a round of applause for Wainui!" We stride along the stage in our lines. We sing 3 songs before the poi. My piupiu following my steps.

"Poi kiamau", I slowly kneel down still doing the actions hoping I can get back up again. It comes to the part when I have to stand up. I hold my breath, "Phew" I make it. We do a few more songs and then we walk of stage while everyone else applauds for us. We jump back on the bus. I wonder, what will it be like next year?

Marae Noho

Last week the whole of Nui syndicate went to our schools Marae. Our Marae is called Te-Poho-o-Rawiri. When we arrived we waited awhile on the concrete. All the kids stared up at the marae and all the carvings in amazement. We got asked to take off our shoes since it's a Maori tradition. Haere mai, Haere mai, Haere mai Auntie buba and Auntie Charlotte welcomed us into the Marae. Once everyone was fully in the Marae, Papa Albie and Jonas Te - Aho took turns speaking. After they had finished welcoming us in they talked to us about all the traditions and how it came to this location.

We had some Kai and then we got split up into small groups of all ages. The teachers had set up some activities for us to do in our groups. On the first day my group did Rako, Old maori games, String games and and a walk up Kati hill. Our Rako were made out of plants and we played games with them. For the old Maori games we played with poi's knuckle bones and old spinning tops. With the string we learnt how to do tricks and games with it. (For the rest of the day all the kids were playing with them.) We walked from the marae to the bottom of the hill and then to the top.

Before dinner we set our beds up and once we had done that we lined up for dinner. That night we had nachos for dinner made by the parents. After dinner our parents came to watch a performance first up we did Kapa Haka and then there was more performances by different kids. After the performances we got ready for bed. I shared a mattress with Olivia. In the morning I had spaghetti on toast. Once you had finished breakfast we went onto the court had a run. Overall I really enjoyed my stay.

Stopping homelessness

This term we have our speech competitions, mine is stopping homelessness. It has to be over 2.30m otherwise it won't get you into the finals. Our inquiry topic is Hauora (Well being), and our speech has to connect to it. In a speech you have a introduction, three main points and a conclusion. In the introduction you say what your speech is about, how you can change it and usually a fact. For your main points you make a point and write about it. For the conclusion you say what you should do to change it.

In our writing workshops we have been learning lots of different sentence structures. They have also given us ideas that we could put into our speech. I'm a little bit nervous since I have to do in front of the class.

Duolingo

This week the teachers decided to add another option to the word work. Word work is a priority that we have to do every week, there is different choices like poetry, handwriting, Kiwi kid news and now Duolingo. Duolingo is a cool website where you can learn other languages. You press on the language you want to learn and than say how long you are going to spend on it each day. I chose Russian and am doing it for 10 minutes each day.

You do courses, in the course it might ask you to pronounce something or spell it. In others it gives you choices and you have to press the correct one. When you get better you unlock the leaderboard so you can see your progress and tell how good you are compared to everyone else. Overall I think it's a fun activity and I love doing it every week.

Because of Winn Dixie

Every term our class has a shared book. This term we read Because of Winn Dixie, it's a book about a girl and her dog. The girls name is Opal, she wants to buy a bright red collar for her dog but she doesn't have enough money. The owner Oatis says she can work there to save up. The next day she goes early to work and spots Oatis playing guitar to the animals, they seem to love it.

On the walk back she meets the Dewberry boys. Winn dixie runs into a backyard and the twins say he won't survive because it is the witch's house. She walks into the backyard and she sees a lady feeding him Peanut butter by spoon. She gets to know Opal and soon they are great friends. Opal goes to the library to find a book to read aloud to Gloria Dump. She reads it aloud so she doesn't hear the past.

Mrs Franny block works at the library. In her desk draw she has a stash of littmus lozenges they taste sweet and sad. In the book that she gets for Gloria dump they have a barbecue party. They decide to do the same. Oatis brings his guitar, Mrs Franny block brings littmus lozenges and Opal brings Winn Dixie. Mrs Franny blocks announces that she wants to put littmus lozenges back in business.

Escape from Kraznir!

This term in my writing group we have been writing a storey called 'Escape from Kraznir.' Every week we have to finish off a chapter. We have slides that we look at so we know what to do each day. I have only done 2 chapters. Some days in our story we have fights and others we are just walking. I chose my name to be Gabrielle and I am the leader of the spies. Kraznir is trying to take over Slinsil, so we got sent to find out his plans.

On the first day we escaped from the dungeon with the chest, got past the guards and collected food. Then we went down a tunnel that led to a cliff, we slept there for the night. On the second day we climb the mountains, fight the Wargs and find a wizard.

At first I thought it would be fun, it was for the first chapter but now I'm not quite sure. Personally I would rather do quick writes, if you don't know what one is than you can look at one of my other blog posts. Would you like to do something like this?

Cross Country

Today our whole school went down to the  course and participated in Cross country. It was a really good day to do it on because the sun was out.  The year 6 girls were up first. I still remember Matua Nic saying on your marks. He clasps the blocks together and I sprint off. We had to do 2 big laps.
My competition was Josefa, she is a really fast runner. For the first half I am just behind her, but as we get near the 2nd lap she sprints off.

I run out of energy and decide not to chase after her. I keep a good pace and when I get near the finish line I hear my house singing our chant. I have a sprint finnish and pass some of the year 6 boys. I end up coming 2nd place. I find a patch of grass and lye down. After I have cooled off I lead the year 1 and 2 girls. A few races pass and I get asked to help pack up. After that we walk back to School.

Cross country coming soon!

Next week we have Cross country. The whole schools has to do it. It takes a whole day for all the school to run it. It is right next to the beach so when you get hot the sea breeze will cool you off. The track is through hills, and on the sand dunes. We run in our year groups. We have to do 2.5 laps of the course. It takes me 13 minutes to do it. The first five get to go too interschools, I did the interschools last year. It is even longer then the schools one, it's 3km. It is mostly on grass but there is a few obstacles on the way.

Houra writing

This term our inquiry topic is Houra (wellbeing.) Every week we have a quick write about our wellbeing. There is our Taha Tinana (Physical wellbeing), Taha Whanau (Social wellbeing), Taha hinengaro (Metal & emotional wellbeing) and Taha Wairua (Spiritual well being.) We had to write about each of those and take out the main bullet points. For our BF challenge we had to make a cube 8x8. On one side we had to draw ourselves on another our name. Then on the others our bullet points. I think it was tricky but worth it.

End of term reflection

It is the last day of the term and we had to do a reflection of the term. Some of our trips were for our
Inquiry topic Retro tech (Olden day tech). I can't wait to find out what our next topic is. We did lot's of exciting things like going to museums, going on wheels day and much much more. This is a tiny reflection of my term.

Harold the giraffe and it's owner came to our school. The talked to us about friends and what we want in one.  We watched some videos about what we would do in the situation At the end of every session Harold sang us a song.

Every Friday we go down to Hamanatua stream. Last year Room 1 planted a whole bunch of native plants. Some weeks we mulch them and other weeks we weed around them.

We went to the museum and the lady talked to us and showed us some of the the old telephones and typewriters. She taught us how to use quilts. We write our name on a piece of paper and then she took a photo of us with a black and white forest behind us.

We went to the Museum of Technology and saw a whole bunch of old cars, old fire engines etc. It was funny comparing the old things to what we have now. Some of the boys managed to work the computers. He told us what our items were actually. We guessed our item was a solar panelled charger but t was actually a rear window heater.

In our dish we have to have 5 ingredients from the school gardens we are using Chives,Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Nastrum leaves. We are making pasta with pasta sauce and berry cheesecake in a glass. We have an 1h and 20m to cook it. If we come first then we go through to the finals. Here is a picture of our dish's.

The girl in a jar

One of our priorities is Quick writes a Quick write is a storey that we write in half an hour.
For this one we h a picture of a girl in a jar. You got to choose if you wanted to be the girl or the cat.
I chose the girl here is the photo.

I am a little girl that lives in a jar. I used to be a big girl but an evil wizard turned me into a little girl and traped me in a jar. That was a couple of years ago though, now I live in a lovely house in a girls bedroom. I remember the days like that when I had my own room. They have a ginger and white cat that thinks I’m an odd shaped mouse so tries to eat me. In the jar which I call my home is a wonderful garden if the cat tries to eat me I hide there.

In the garden there is a staircase, that staircase leads down to my house. It is two story and has everything that my old home used to have. It has my bedroom kitchen and everything that I had in my big house. It even has my puppy but sadly my puppy is now an ornament. That’s what the wizard did to him.

One day I decide to find a way to get out of here. The wizard said that if I figure out how to get out I will become my old self again.  I never had thought until now that I would try to escape. It is such a lovely place. I decide that the easiest way to get out was to climb a tree. The last time I tried to climb a tree was when I was bigger and that didn’t end too well.

I find the biggest tree and begin to climb. I step up onto the first branch and keep on reaching for the next branch. After I get up a few I see that the branches form a staircase all the way up to the top of the jar. About an hour later I finally get to the top, and that's when I realise I forgot my dog. I can’t go back know though I’ve gone to far.

I jump and land on the bed, but the room had turned into mine. I heard a barking noise and looked around. That’s when I saw my dog. If I could remember I could find my way t the kitchen because I am starving...

Gymnastics festival!

A few weeks ago it was the gymnastics festival the whole school participated. We had been training up to it for the last few weeks.  We had to do beam, floor, Vault and the boys did bar. For beam I used my routine from the gym club so I wouldn't get mixed up. Some other girls and me are in competitive, we compete for the gym club. I also did that for my floor. For vault  we had to straddle over the box. I had top stay for longer  and I got to watch the rhythmical. They were amazing.

Turbo Diner!

In my writing group we have been looking at this show called Wallace and Gromit. We have been watching  episodes of them about machines this one is the Turbo Diner. The Turbo Diner is a machine that tidies up after you and makes your dinner.

All you have to do is insert a coin maybe two so you can make sure it doesn't turn off and then you just sit back and relax.
It will clear up your table if you have been doing something on it. Then get your dinner ready and heat it up. Once you have settled down on the table it will light the candle. We did this in our group because we have been looking at retro tech which is our school inquiry topic for this term.

Museum trip

We did this because our inquiry topic for this term is retro tech which is technology from the olden days. In our buzz groups we all have an item that we have to guess what it is. I think my buzz group has a solar panel charger. We had great fun at the museum and we really want to go again.

Superman needs help!

Hi, this is one of my quick writes hope you enjoy.

Superman needed help. He picked up his phone and began to dial 111. " What do you want." Said the voice at the other end of the line.

"Cat woman"Superman shouted. Beep beep they had hung up on me. So I tried 333,

" Superman to the rescue, I need help are you Cat Woman.
" Yes I am where are you."

" I am on puddleton ST outside on the telephone and a kitten is about to be run over by a truck." Her ears pricked up, "I'll be right with you." The truck slowly rolls forward, the driver listening to music, not being able to see the kitten. Then Cat Woman quickly runs and grabs the kitten when we realise there's another one.

Hope you enjoyed my Quick write.

World War 3 at Hamanatua Stream 2019

I hope you liked my slide show. We went down to Hamanatua stream to help the native plants because all of the fennel was getting too close to the native plants roots and then they could die. So we helped them and destroyed all the fennel.
Bye!!!
